you keep scripting the wrong narrative in your mind

Ever think about how your attention crafts the story you tell yourself? It's easy to mistake the tale for reality. Attention shapes your narrative, and by acknowledging this, you get to redesign the whole plot.

Raymond is a multi-disciplinary designer and developer. You'll find him most commonly skateboarding, having a coffee, programming, algorithmic day trading, creating 3D art or working to bring the Reality Designers vision to life.

when you build walls in your mind

Your focus doesn.

Attention is kind of like a spotlight. Where you shine it, that's where the story unfolds. I mean, it's not like the rest doesn't exist. It's just not in the light, so it might as well be in another universe as far as your perception is concerned.
For a long time, I thought I had to figure out everything outside of me to get anywhere, but really, the inside was the control room for all of it. It's the switchboard.
And here's where it gets a little twisty. Your attention isn't just some benign force out here. It's more like a sculptor's chisel, shaping, refining, and editing the block of marble that is your experience. You think you're seeing things clearly, but in reality, you're only catching the parts you're carving out.
Everything else? It's just ignored, left raw and undefined.
the downside of thinking in systems too much — Section 1
You see, what you're focusing on isn't just influencing your perception; it's actively designing your narrative. It's building the architecture of your beliefs, your experiences, and the reality you move through. When I decided to change course from the expected path, it wasn't about the action as much as it was about the shift in focus, I stopped shining the light on what others expected and pointed it toward uncharted territories. What did I find there?
Freedom to narrate my own story. From there, everything else kind of reorients itself, almost like magic, but not really. It's just perception cleverly at play.
So, if you're at all like me, you'll be wondering now: what are the frequencies you keep tuning into without even realizing it? There's this guy I met while couchsurfing across the country. He was absolutely convinced that he was destined for failure. And it wasn't because he was lazy or anything; he actually worked absurd hours.
But he had this self-defeating script running in his mind that he believed was engraved in stone. He never realized he could take up the chisel and re-carve the whole narrative to something more empowering. His attention was locked on failure, a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Here's a technique to snap out of that: do a reality audit by listing out the stories you tell yourself daily. Ask, "Why do I think this? " Chances are, some of these stories are just subconscious tapes from someone else’s playlist. Rewrite them.
Take control of the script. Make these stories your own, deliberately chosen, not just the default someone else programmed into you. This is how you go from being a passive character in someone else's story to the author of your own adventure.

When you start to rewrite your narrative.

the downside of thinking in systems too much
The craziest thing is how interconnected it all is. You change your focus, and it's like a ripple effect through your entire system. Suddenly, what felt like immutable facts are more like temporary constructs, ready to be disassembled and rebuilt at your leisure. Think about it.
You've got this inner world that's constantly patching and updating based on where you direct your attention, almost like an algorithm curating your reality.
What's wild is how the outside world tends to mirror these changes. It's like you're sending out psychic notifications, and everything around you adjusts accordingly. You ever notice that when you're having a great day, little things that would normally irritate you just don't seem to stick? It's because you've shifted the narrative.
You've tuned into a different frequency, one that's more congruent with your new focus. You literally start seeing opportunities because you've decided they're a part of your story now.
Here's where it gets more layered. Let's say you're still struggling with those old storylines you can't quite shake off. That's when it's time to architect a whole new framework of perception. Sit down, list out new intentions for what you want to manifest, and start feeding those thoughts until they dominate your focus.
When I started my first gig as a freelancer, I was convinced no one would ever hire me. Turns out, as soon as I switched tracks in my head, "I'm in demand because I'm unique in what I offer", the gigs started flooding in. I simply opened up to that reality.

The narratives.

You know, scripting your narrative is something every artist, coder, and designer subconsciously does. Think of it like creating an app, you're continuously beta testing, refining, updating to see what works in real-time. It's not some figment of imagination but a practical mechanism acting on your inner world.
And you know, once you're aware of this process, you can start diagnosing where your scripts go wrong. Like running a system check on your beliefs. It's all about recognizing those psychic notifications trying to guide you in redesigning the architecture of your perception. The whole world becomes a canvas, and your narrative is the brush stained with new colors.
Pause for a moment amidst your busy day and look around. What stories do you keep telling yourself about who you are or what you're capable of? Are they the original scripts you wrote, or are they annotations from someone else's script? You have the pen, and sometimes you need to go back, erase the old and rewrite significant parts of your manuscript.

Now, don't get me wrong, this isn't about living in denial of external realities. You can still acknowledge them, but you get to choose how much power they wield over your narrative. You ever notice how artists see the world differently, just because they focus on different elements? It's like that.
You don't have to ignore things that draw you back but rather redirect your focus where you want your narrative to go.
And if you're feeling ambitious, why not share this new narrative art with others? It's powerful, as it not only changes your perception but might just alter theirs, too, if they're open to it. Kind of like co-authoring a collaborative novel, the more perspectives that enter your focus, the more colors you get to splash onto the page.
Letting these concepts percolate through your mind for a while is crucial. You don't want to jump to conclusions, thinking you've got it all figured out. Trust me, I've been there. The important thing is to keep a constant dialogue with yourself, questioning and refining the narratives as new experiences unfold.
You know those old-school radios where you had to tweak the dials to get a clear signal? Life's like that, you keep adjusting the knobs till you hear the right station. But unlike an old radio, you're not just tuning in; you're broadcasting, too.
Think about what happens when you start treating life as a co-creative process with yourself as the main architect. You stop being just a consumer of experiences, instead becoming a designer of them. You decide to build frameworks instead of just riding pre-built ones. It's the difference between walking into a room that someone else decorated and designing the space to reflect you.
From there, things start evolving to fit the new reality you crafted.
If you take anything from this, let it be that you're in control more than you think. You can redirect your focus like adjusting the lighting in a room. Dim some areas, spotlight others, or even change the bulb's color entirely. It's a lot to take in, sure, but once you start experimenting, you'd be surprised how quickly you can script a more harmonious narrative.

The bottom line is to keep exploring. There are no ultimate truths, no facts that are set in stone. It's fluid, malleable, a piece of clay in a sculptor's hands, ready to be shaped. Experiment with scripts, colors, projections, and see how they're narrating your experience.
The canvas of what you can create is infinite, like a narrative that never really ends but keeps looping back with new threads.
Does all of this make everything feel a bit complicated? Maybe. But I think the best part is that you get to question everything, constantly tweak and refine, and see where you end up. That's the brilliant part of designing your experience.
It's never about reaching a destination but about enjoying the process and seeing just how far you can stretch the narrative you're scripting. And then you wonder, isn't that what makes the entire process meaningful, knowing you've authored every page?
