debugging your beliefs is like woodworking

I've always found that digging into my own beliefs is a lot like woodworking. You know, chipping away at the parts that don't fit, sanding down rough edges, and finally standing back to see something that fits perfectly into the space you're crafting in your life.

Raymond is a multi-disciplinary designer and developer. You'll find him most commonly skateboarding, having a coffee, programming, algorithmic day trading, creating 3D art or working to bring the Reality Designers vision to life.

when you build walls in your mind
So, I've been thinking, right? Picture yourself as a craftsman of your own beliefs, not a coder at a screen, but someone who's got their hands dirty, chisel in one hand and a block of wood in the other. Because to really get into this whole designing-your-life thing, you gotta consider: every belief you've got shapes the experience you end up living, like carving a statue from raw material.
I've had these moments, those realization crashes, where my frame of understanding was, well, incomplete. I was living through presets, letting my mental clutter, those unexamined beliefs, dictate the shape of my consciousness. And then it hits you, right? Like, why am I holding onto this chunk of rotten wood that doesn't belong in the masterpiece I'm trying to create?
Now, here's where it gets real for me. Back when I was 20, broke as hell but somehow brimming with ideas, I realized I was dragging around this belief that success was this rigid, one-way path: college, career, stability. My internal monologue was full of "should'ves": I should've taken that scholarship, should've gotten that degree. But the funny thing is, I kept choosing the streets and startups over lecture halls.
Not a common choice but here's what I realized, the shape of success for me wasn't just out of alignment; it was an entirely different sculpture. The belief was the chip I needed to remove to let my actual form emerge.

Beliefs are these hidden layers of paint on your life.

the downside of thinking in systems too much — Section 1
When you start to chisel away these pre-installed beliefs, it's like sculpting something new. These outdated paradigms are just obstacles, blocking the true essence of what you're capable of crafting. I remember a friend, let's call him Rob. He always thought he couldn't start a business without venture capital.
Belief ingrained from God knows where, probably the finance guys in sleek suits who think you have to play their game to win. Then, Rob starts tinkering with small projects on weekends, just a side hustle, right? But every bit of success chipped away at that fossilized belief. His experience, unpeeling the layers, revealed a strength he didn’t know he had.
Seeing Rob work was like watching an artist break free from their own constraints. Once the core, the passion, was free of its bound intentions, everything seemed possible. Gone was the need for validation from traditional paths. There's an art in this, understanding that beliefs are not rooted in reality, they're just projections, and any of them can be changed, like furniture you rearrange in a room to change the whole feel.

Your beliefs hang like old paintings on a wall, some you need to frame and others you need to replace altogether.

Alright, so let's get practical. If you're looking to try this out, here's a technique you can literally start right now: belief sketching. This hits home for all you DIY creators. You're going to list out these beliefs, big, small, weird, all of them, and then do a mockup.
Seriously, like a blueprint for a piece of furniture. Write each belief down, your raw materials. Then ask yourself: is this sturdy enough to support the life I’m building? If not, what needs to be shaved off, restructured, replaced?
That’s your first step in belief remodeling.
the downside of thinking in systems too much
Okay, if you're doing this right, something inside you clicks, that's how you know you're getting somewhere. You look at these frameworks of thought and start seeing them as they are, open to be reshaped. It's a bit like sanding, isn't it? Removing just a bit, smoothening the rough edges those beliefs have made in you.
And you realize, hey, you have the power to shape reality into something that suits your design.
And speaking of reality, because everything loops back to that damn word, here’s a thought: It's like those complex doors you see in palaces, beautifully crafted with intricate designs. They're elegant but require careful sculpting. That's like your awareness. How you perceive life has these detailed intricacies that need constant refining.
Every decision you make is another notch, another measure of craftsmanship. So, how do we avoid getting stuck in these default doorways, and really aim for those hidden passageways into the potential of our sculpted beliefs?
I guess I keep circling back to this game we’re all in, life, consciousness, reality, mix and repeat. It’s less about acquiring new beliefs and more about the fine art of removal, of getting rid of what doesn’t serve. You could spend ages messing around with different techniques, trying to install fancy new fixtures into your belief system. But truth is, more often than not, the most profound shifts come when you strip away rather than add.
Here’s where someone out there is probably asking how do you get people, especially yourself, to let go of an existing belief. Let's face it, it doesn’t magically happen overnight. Taking a belief apart, that’s the hard bit. It took me ages before I stopped thinking of myself as that kid who failed formal education.
I'd chiseled that bit of my self-image so finely that even when I was succeeding on my own terms, that old imprint still lingered. So, with a mindset like woodworking, you have to be relentless in reshaping.

Shaping your beliefs is the act of carving out a masterpiece from a block of unexamined assumptions.

I guess that's why doing it right feels like mastery, and mastery is what we're after, isn't it? Those psychic notifications life sends you when a belief needs an upgrade or deletion? That's how you know you're hacking life right. Paying attention, hearing both the friction and the harmony in your attempts to sculpt.
Let me give you another example. There’s a woman, Anna. " that she found her ability to start again. Her ability to reshape her life emerged only after letting go of the fear-laced belief.
It’s like taking a complete statue, removing a single patch, and seeing the entire structure transform. The power to change was in the removal, not the addition.

Another thing I’ve noticed while wrestling with these ideas is how people treat beliefs like untouchable parts of their identity. But it's flexible, keep that in mind. You’re not undoing who you are by debugging your assumptions; you’re just reworking the pieces that no longer fit the gallery of who you’re becoming. This game isn't about starting from scratch, just about reworking the existing material.
When you handle them with the finesse of a craftsman, your beliefs become the scaffolding for the life you're building. Pull apart an unhealthy belief like tearing down a derelict building, making room for something better suited to today’s reality, I've been there, done that, and I’m still in the process with new layers.
So, in the end, or maybe as a starting point, remember that your conscious design is never a one-and-done project. It's dynamic, fluctuating, and as transient or permanent as you decide. Designing life, I think, is more about subtraction than addition. Once you start chiseling away, the shape of what you’re really on about becomes clearer.
It’s a continuous process, much like woodworking, that requires patience and the willingness to let go of what doesn’t serve.
You take that chisel, start scraping away. Still, wonder if there's an easier way, right? Maybe tweak this here, test that there. But what if there's more, something else to understand, some other layer to dismantle or another piece to fit just right?
Isn't that what makes the whole thing a thrilling journey?

Craft your beliefs carefully, and life will follow your design like wood transformed into your reality.
